TRAVEL WEEKLY RECOGNIZES COSTA RICA AS THE BEST DESTINATION SPOT

• The award was presented during the International Tourism Trade Fair in Spain

Costa Rica continues being one of the best destination sites in Central and South America according to the renowned publication Travel Weekly, which, during the International Tourism Trade Fair (ITTF), presented the award to the Minister of Tourism, Carlos Ricardo Benavides.

For the Minister of Tourism, Carlos Ricardo Benavides, the presentation of this award is recognition of the country as well as the effort that the Costa Rican tourism industry has made to position it as one of the best within the international tourism market.

“We are very proud of having been recognized in this category, primarily because the selection was made by prestigious members of the North American tourist industry, which recognize the quality of the Costa Rican tourist product and commit us to continue improving in the future,” said Benavides.

Benavides accepted the award in Spain in the presence of representatives of the Costa Rican tourism industry. Among the notables were Patricia Duar of the Costa Rican Professionals Association in Tourism (ACROPROT) and Gonzalo Vargas of the National Chamber of Tourism (CANATUR).

“The acknowledgment is gratifying, the fact that it forces us, and at the same time, commits us to maintain the position that we have and to continue making every possible effort in the public and private sector, to sustain and improve our position for future tourism” stated Vargas.

According to him, Duar points out that the award presented by Travel Weekly for the second straight year, not only reaffirms the favorable position of our country, but also compels us to uphold or improve the services that visitors expect. It also shows that the representation of Costa Rica in ITTF has depended on the valuable participation of national tourism professionals.

“The presentation and participation of Costa Rica in this ITTF event has been truly outstanding. The director of ITTF, Ana Larrañaga commented that the special distinction of the country has really been ‘to show the country’s natural environment’ representing what a visitor to Costa Rica will find. Also the large turn out of Costa Ricans reflects their interest in promoting the country as one that can undoubtedly compete with other destination spots throughout the world that were present at the fair that have larger budgets and better positioning,” said Duar.

This award is the result of the attention given by more than 180 thousand readers from travel agencies, travel agents based out of their homes, hotel owners, tour operators, suppliers and corporations of the United States tourism industry. Costa Rica obtained the award competing with candidates like Brazil, Perú, Belize, and Argentina.

Travel Weekly is one of the most important publications in the tourist industry of the United States. It has a circulation of 41,000 copies and 180,000 readers. They offer their readers news and topics regarding hotels, resorts, airlines, cruises, car rentals, destinations, and travel packages.

The magazine established its “Travel Weekly Reader’s Choice Awards” five years ago, during which, Costa Rica has been a notable mention on three occasions (in 2004, 2006, and 2007 –most recent-).
