COSTA RICA INTENSIFIES ACTION PLANS FOR THE ARRIVAL OF CRUISE SHIPS

Proving to the main investors of the cruise ship industry that Costa Rica is one of the best destinations in the region, is only one of the objectives to be achieved conjunctly by the Costa Rica Tourist Board (ICT), the Costa Rican Institute of Pacific Ports (INCOP), and the Board of the Port Authority and Development for the Atlantic Coast (JAPDEVA) at the International Sea Trade Fair which started this week in Miami, Florida, United States.

The Minister of Tourism, Carlos Ricardo Benavides, pointed out that for the first time this year Costa Rica took part in the event presenting a joint promotion action plan with the above mentioned institutions. This reflects the policy developed by the ICT in terms of forming strategic alliances to strengthen tourism.

The action plan that Benavides is conducting includes meetings with representatives from Holland America Cruise Lines, Princess Cruise Lines, Royal Caribbean, as well as members of the Florida Caribbean Cruise Association (FCCA), in order to discuss the country’s strategy regarding several topics, including safety issues.

“Our strategy involves a joint commitment to deal with safety issues. In the case of the Caribbean coast, the promotion strategy has been established through a commission formed by the ICT, JAPDEVA, the Ministry of Security, the Municipality and the industry. The action plan includes the definition of zero tolerance regions, safe routes, the increase of police force, control and certification of service operators catering to the cruise ship business, among others,” stated Benavides.

Moreover, dealing with safety issues implies taking measures that go beyond the municipal police. This does not only include developing initiatives to strengthen the Tourist Police, but also programs to train lifeguards and install signs at the beaches with the most dangerous sea tide conditions, as well as signaling on routes that lead to the main tourist destinations.

This event, which is being held at the Miami Convention Center, will allow the country to strengthen its relations with the industry, as well as to strategically promote the destination. The event will also facilitate possible negotiations with cruise lines and the discovery of tourist attractions offered by other destinations.

This year, the stand that represents the country at the fair is four times bigger than the one used during 2006 (829 feet). This allows the presence of the ICT, INCOP, and JAPDEVA, in addition to other companies such as Swiss Travel, TAM Travel, Asuaire and Costa Rica Dream Travel.

The Sea Trade Fair is the largest event in the world concerning the cruise line industry. Over 100 countries and 950 companies participate in this event. Some of the most renowned companies are Carnival Cruises, Royal Caribbean, and Norwegian Cruises.
