Public Image Ltd Live in San Jose, Costa Rica: April 17, 2026

Public Image Ltd (PiL), led by John Lydon, known to many as Johnny Rotten of the Sex Pistols—will perform at the Pepper Club in San Jose, Costa Rica on April 17, 2026. The show will feature a mix of classic post-punk energy and newer material from their recent albums.

Setlist Highlights and Performance Style

The setlist is expected to blend early PiL tracks like Public Image and This Is Not a Love Song with songs from their later albums, including End of World (2023).

Evolution from Sex Pistols to PiL

After the Sex Pistols disbanded in 1978, John Lydon shed his Johnny Rotten persona to form Public Image Ltd. He wanted freedom from punk’s narrow image and aimed to explore sound beyond rebellion and shock.

PiL’s early music replaced punk aggression with dub basslines, minimalist guitars, and spoken vocals. Their debut album, First Issue (1978), introduced this shift. It showed Lydon’s interest in mood and texture over melody.

By the time of Metal Box (1979), also known as Second Edition, PiL had become a defining force in post-punk. The record’s layered production and unconventional structure influenced later alternative and electronic acts. Lydon’s decision to keep PiL flexible allowed it to survive changing musical trends while staying distinct from his Sex Pistols past.

Influential Albums and Collaborations

PiL’s discography reflects constant reinvention. Flowers of Romance (1981) stripped away bass and guitars, focusing on percussion and atmosphere. That What Is Not (1992) brought a harder rock sound that fit the early ’90s.

The band’s 1986 album Album (also known as Compact Disc or Cassette) featured notable collaborators like Ginger Baker on drums and Steve Vai on guitar. Their technical skill balanced Lydon’s raw vocal style.

In later years, PiL worked with artists such as Ryuichi Sakamoto and Ari Up, showing the group’s openness to global and experimental influences. Each release, including 9 (1989), carried Lydon’s direct lyrical tone but varied in musical approach, proving his ability to adapt without losing identity.

Band Members and Notable Contributors

PiL’s lineup changed frequently, shaping its sound across eras. Early members included Jah Wobble on bass and Keith Levene on guitar, whose dub and avant-garde styles defined the first records.

Later contributors like Martin Atkins, Lu Edmonds, and Bruce Smith added rhythmic and textural depth. Each brought different influences, from world music to industrial rock.

Lydon remained the constant voice and creative core. His leadership kept PiL unified through internal shifts and long gaps between albums. The band’s rotating membership helped it stay fresh, ensuring its legacy as one of post-punk’s most adaptable and enduring projects.
